Midnight Meta Tier List: What the Community Agrees On
This guide aggregates tier list rankings from multiple authoritative sources to show where the WoW community agrees (and disagrees) on spec performance heading into Midnight Season 1. Rather than trusting a single tier list, this meta-analysis reveals consensus picks and contentious rankings.

Tank Consensus Rankings
The Data
| Tank Spec | Icy Veins | Archon | Quazii | Sha | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vengeance DH | S | B | S | Strong | S-Tier |
| Protection Paladin | S | B | A+ | Strong | S-Tier |
| Brewmaster Monk | A | S | A | Solid | A-Tier / Contentious |
| Protection Warrior | A | A | A | Solid | A-Tier |
| Guardian Druid | B | C | B+ | Mid | B-Tier |
| Blood Death Knight | B | C | B | Contentious | B-Tier / Contentious |
Where Everyone Agrees
Vengeance Demon Hunter is S-Tier
Every source places VDH at or near the top. The Midnight rework solved longstanding issues: Spirit Bomb/Soul Cleave conflict resolved, front-loaded defensives, uncapped Soul Cleave damage. Icy Veins calls it "in a league of its own."
Protection Paladin is Top-Tier
Consensus S or A+ across all sources. The spec received major QoL improvements: Consecration no longer required for defense, Guardian of Ancient Kings has 2 charges, Mastery rework provides passive benefits. Still the utility king with Divine Shield, Blessing of Spellwarding, and cleanses.
Guardian Druid is Mid-Tier
Reliably placed B-tier everywhere. Never really bad, but never excels in any particular area. The Thorns of Iron removal reduced APM significantly, and Sundering Roar finally addressed burst AoE issues, but damage output concerns persist.
Where Sources Disagree
Brewmaster Monk: The Data vs. The Theory
Archon data tells a completely different story than tier list creators:
- Archon ranks Brewmaster as S-Tier with the highest M+ score (3605) of any tank
- Icy Veins and most creators rank it A-Tier, citing concerns about the Midnight changes
- 27% popularity on Archon shows significant player confidence
Blood Death Knight: Fallen From Grace
Blood DK's position has shifted dramatically during beta:
- Archon now ranks Blood DK as C-Tier with only 2.9% popularity
- Icy Veins ranks it B-Tier, citing defensive toolkit concerns after Lichborne, Rune Tap, Tombstone, and Bonestorm removal
- Early beta hype has faded as players discovered the defensive gaps
Recommendation: If you're an experienced Blood DK player, the spec still rewards mastery. But the defensive toolkit losses are real, and you'll feel them in high keys. New tanks should look elsewhere.
Healer Consensus Rankings
The Data
| Healer Spec | Icy Veins | Archon | Community | Consensus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restoration Druid | S | Very High | S | S-Tier |
| Discipline Priest | A+ | High | A+ | A+-Tier |
| Restoration Shaman | A | Mid-High | A | A-Tier |
| Holy Paladin | B | Mid | B+ | B-Tier |
| Mistweaver Monk | C | Mid | C+ | C-Tier |
| Preservation Evoker | C | Mid | C | C-Tier |
| Holy Priest | Unsure | Unknown | TBD | TBD |
Where Everyone Agrees
Restoration Druid Dominates
Unanimous S-Tier placement. The spec received intense pruning aimed at lowering barrier to entry. Only 1 Lifebloom to maintain now (down from 2), Power of the Archdruid frees up GCDs. Healing throughput is amazing and likely one of the highest in Mythic+.
Discipline Priest is Excellent
A+ consensus. Major focus on pruning core rotation and easing cooldown management. Ultimate Penitence is now a choice node with Power Word: Barrier. Oracle build healing profile is looking great.
Restoration Shaman is Solid
The spec was torn to pieces and rebuilt for Midnight. Ascendance is now a choice node with Healing Tide Totem, Cloudburst Totem removed. Critically, Restoration Shaman is the ONLY healer that still has an interrupt, making it extremely valuable.
Where Sources Disagree
Holy Paladin Placement
Some sources rate Holy Paladin higher than Icy Veins' B-Tier, citing the major rework: lower Avenging Wrath cooldown, massive focus on Holy Shock, Holy Prism choice node with Divine Toll. The mana issues concern everyone, but the redesign addresses HPS gaps outside of major cooldowns.
Preservation Evoker's Future
Currently C-Tier but the spec received a major rework: Lifebind can't be echoed, removal of Spiritbloom, Emerald Communion, and Cycle of Life. Core healing shifted to Verdant Embrace, Dream Breath, Echo. Spec should play easier in Midnight. Some believe it's underrated and will climb once players adapt.
DPS Consensus Rankings
S-Tier Consensus
| Spec | Icy Veins | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Frost Mage | S | Complete rework, "one of the most fun specs" |
| Devastation Evoker | S | Both hero talents reworked, Flameshaper winning |
Frost Mage received a complete rework. Nothing like the previous iteration. Managing Freezing Stacks, Comet Storm is now passive, Ray of Frost is the major cooldown (Icy Veins removed), Glacial Spike baked into Frostbolt. Universally praised.
Devastation Evoker maintains bursty, strong AoE profile with uncapped Dragonrage extension. Consume Flame replaces Engulf in Flameshaper. Lost some defensive options but damage profile is excellent.
A+-Tier Consensus
| Spec | Icy Veins | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Arcane Mage | S (Tuning-dep) | 2x Touch of the Magi, Arcane Pulse replaces melee |
| Augmentation Evoker | S (Tuning-dep) | "Best Apex talents among all DPS specs" |
| Destruction Warlock | A+ | Core rotation similar, Roaring Blaze QoL |
| Survival Hunter | A+ | Major rework, dual-wield option, easier rotation |
| Fury Warrior | A+ | Best utility-package buff any class received |
| Affliction Warlock | A+ | Complete 360 rework, back to Seed of Corruption |
| Unholy Death Knight | A+ | Biggest rework in a decade, no Festering Wounds |
| Marksmanship Hunter | A+ | Kill Shot only for MM, slower pace |
| Fire Mage | A+ | Major rework, 1-minute Combustion |
A-Tier Consensus
| Spec | Icy Veins | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Beast Mastery Hunter | A | Apex talents, easier Beast Cleave management |
| Frost Death Knight | A | Minor changes, Apex talents |
| Subtlety Rogue | A | Biggest pruning across all DPS, 2-button AoE |
| Outlaw Rogue | A | Substantial rework, no Stealth/Crackshot windows |
| Elemental Shaman | A | Major rework, Icefury/Echoes/DRE removed |
| Arms Warrior | A | Apex talents, Heroic Strike/Slam juggling |
| Enhancement Shaman | A | Complete rework, extreme pruning |
| Havoc Demon Hunter | A | Trimmed spells, 2x Blur charges, Glaive Tempest passive |
B-Tier and Below
| Spec | Icy Veins | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Devourer DH (NEW) | B | New semi-ranged spec, Void Metamorphosis |
| Retribution Paladin | B | Priority-target issues persist |
| Balance Druid | B | Eclipse rework to active button |
| Windwalker Monk | C | Target-cap issues, numbers not there |
| Feral Druid | C | Major rework, easier rotation |
TBD/Contentious
- Demonology Warlock - Implosion cooldown change needs more testing
- Shadow Priest - Complete rework again, needs time
- Assassination Rogue - Great QoL but energy regen concerns

How to Use This Guide
For Spec Selection: Look for specs where all sources agree. S-Tier consensus picks (VDH, Resto Druid, Frost Mage) are safe investments.
For Controversial Specs: If you see disagreement (Blood DK, Holy Paladin), the spec likely has high skill expression. Your personal performance may vary significantly from tier list predictions.
For Tuning-Dependent Specs: Arcane Mage and Augmentation Evoker are marked as "tuning-dependent" S-Tier. They have S-Tier potential but final balance depends on numbers that can change before launch.
Remember:
- Beta tier lists change weekly
- Play rate doesn't equal power (Blood DK is most played but not highest rated)
- Skill expression matters more than tier placement for most players
- Utility can outweigh raw throughput in coordinated groups
Raid vs M+ Considerations
Some specs rank differently for raid content:
| Spec | M+ Tier | Raid Tier | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brewmaster Monk | S (Archon) / A (Icy Veins) | Strong | Data shows results, theory says A |
| Blood DK | C (Archon) / B (Icy Veins) | Stronger | San'layn excels in raids |
| Guardian Druid | C (Archon) / B (Icy Veins) | A | Druid of the Claw dominates ST |
| Augmentation Evoker | Tuning-dep | S | Shines in coordinated raid groups |
Final Thoughts
The Midnight beta shows a healthier meta than recent expansions. Blizzard's focus on clean defense cycles and smoother resource use instead of panic cooldowns has improved tank gameplay across the board. Healer pruning has lowered barriers to entry while maintaining skill expression. DPS reworks have addressed longstanding issues like Frost Mage's identity crisis and Unholy DK's clunky rotation.
The biggest takeaway: Play what you enjoy. Outside of the highest competitive content, personal skill and encounter knowledge matter more than tier placement. The gap between tiers is smaller in Midnight than in previous expansions.
